Introduction
About the Bicerin
Turin is much more than just Fiat, Juventus and world heritage sites. Behind its elegant façade lies a city that has been delighting gourmets from all over the world for centuries. Numerous culinary classics that are internationally renowned today have their origins right here.
For example, the famous grissini – crispy breadsticks that were originally baked for an ailing king – were invented in Turin back in 1679. The first tramezzini, those tender sandwiches without a crust, also originated in a small café near Piazza Castello. Vermouth was born here, as was the world’s first popsicle – gelato pinguino – which caused a sensation in 1939 with its chocolate shell.
But no connection is as close as the one between Turin and chocolate. Since the 16th century, a true chocolate culture has developed here, leading to the invention of gianduia, pralines and even the first chocolate processing machines. It was in the midst of this tradition that the legendary Bicerin was created – a composition of coffee, milk and chocolate that inspired Alexandre Dumas.
Turin is therefore not only a center of European history, but also a cradle of sweet delights – a city where culture and cuisine are inextricably linked.
